Acknowledgements First and foremost I would like to thank my adviser Professor Stephen FitzGerald for his advice and support, for always making time to answer my questions and for showing me how fascinating, frustrating and rewarding experimental physics can be. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue this work which has been a significant and enjoyable part of my time at Oberlin. I thank my labmates past and present:Donald for interesting and helpful conversations and fun times in lab. Many thanks to Professor Jesse Rowsell for synthesizing our MOFs and for his helpful conversations and insights into the structure and behavior of these materials. I thank Professor Jason Stalnaker for his advice and for teaching me much of the physics I know now. I thank Ben for being a great friend and for wonderful conversations about physics and life. I thank my fellow physics students including but not limited to Kathryn Hasz, for their friendship and company which made even all night problem sets not only bearable but great fun. I would like to thank Donald Nelson for invaluable help proof reading.

Infrared overtone spectroscopy of adsorbed hydrogen in MOF-5
Overtone spectroscopy is used to observe the rovibrational spectra of the hydrogen isotopologues H2, HD, and D2 adsorbed in the metal–organic framework known as MOF-5. It is shown that the overtone spectrum facilitates the identification of hydrogen modes which are obscured in the fundamental region by the presence of MOF-5 features. Further, the overtone spectrum of H2 at the primary adsorptio...
متن کاملInvestigation of hydrogen sulfide adsorption in metallic scaffold MOF-5 nanocomposite based on activated carbon for the use of respiratory mask cartridge
Introduction: Hydrogen sulfide is one of the most important impurities in natural gas. Due to the fact that this gas is hazardous, toxic, corrosive and volatile, therefore, the removal of hydrogen sulfide has been studied using several methods. One of the most known procedures is the adsorption process. In the present study, activated carbon and activated carbon-based composite scaffolds (MOF-5...
متن کاملEnhanced Photochemical Hydrogen Production by a Molecular Diiron Catalyst Incorporated into a Metal–Organic Framework
A molecular proton reduction catalyst [FeFe](dcbdt)(CO)6 (1, dcbdt = 1,4-dicarboxylbenzene-2,3-dithiolate) with structural similarities to [FeFe]-hydrogenase active sites has been incorporated into a highly robust Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) by postsynthetic exchange (PSE). The PSE protocol is crucial as direct solvothermal synthesis fails to produce the functionalized MOF. The m...
متن کاملIR plus vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy of neutral and ionic organic acid monomers and clusters: propanoic acid.
The vibrational spectrum of molecular propanoic acid, cooled in a supersonic expansion, in the region of 2500 to 7500 cm(-1) is obtained employing infrared plus vacuum ultraviolet nonresonant ionization detected spectroscopy. The fundamental and first overtone of the CH and OH stretch modes of cold propanoic acid molecules can be identified in the spectrum. Propanoic acid neutral and ionic clus...
متن کاملEnhanced removal of methylene blue dye by bimetallic nano-sized MOF-5s
Metal-organic framework 5 (MOF-5) and bimetallic MOF-5s (Co/Zn and Ni/Zn) were prepared via a simple solvothermal method. Samples were characterized by various techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and elemental analysis (EA). Photo...
